BASICS OF NEGATIVE SCANNING

Instructor: Katy Walls

A crash course in digitizing negatives! Students will learn the proper way to handle, clean, and store their negatives, and overview the different settings that influence a scan’s resolution and quality. Katy will demo both color and black and white films, as well as 35mm, 120, and 4×5 film formats. C41 COLOR FILM PROCESSING [Workshop]

Instructor: Thomas Way

A socially distant introduction to C-41 Color Photography. Capture light and color on film with SLR cameras; using your own camera or a Crafts Center loaner. This hybrid learning opportunity begins with an in-person meeting followed by two online ZOOM sessions. Students and instructor, Thomas Way, will safely meet on campus for discussion and interactive photo-walk. Student film will be processed during the second session and scanned by the instructor for the third session; focusing on a group critique to improve techniques. After this class, students will have an understanding of how to shoot and process C-41 Color film; along with a solid foundation of photography fundamentals to build upon. All supplies included with class price.

INTRODUCTION TO DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY

Do you own a digital camera but don’t quite know how to use it? Then this course is for you! In this course Jeannene will teach basic concepts and discuss how ISO, aperture, and shutter speed collectively create a photograph and how to change each setting based on your desired outcome. Students are encouraged to ask questions throughout each session. You will need to have your own digital camera at hand to get the most out of this course. MATCHBOX PINHOLE CAMERA [Workshop]

Instructor: Katy Walls

Learn to make your own camera using a box of matches! In this workshop students will craft a pinhole camera using everyday objects to capture images on 35mm color film. A partial supply kit will be provided (local pick up only) and students will be responsible for providing some of their own supplies.

Supplies that you will need to provide:

  • Craft knife or exacto blade
  • Black gaffers tape or electrical tape
  • Black permanent marker
  • Pen or pencil
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Aluminum soda can tab

NC STATE IN BLACK AND WHITE

A socially distant introduction to black and white photography —capture light and motion on film with SLR cameras; using your own camera or a Crafts Center loaner. This hybrid learning opportunity begins with an in-person meeting followed by several online ZOOM sessions. Students and instructor, Thomas Way, will safely meet on campus for discussion and interactive photo-walk. Student film will need to be processed and scanned by The Foto Shoppe (located in Cary) with the following class focusing on a group critique to improve techniques before shooting a second roll of film.  Darkroom procedures and negative scanning will be discussed, leaving students prepped and ready for a fun and fascinating future in film photography!

PHOTOGRAPHING YOUR ARTWORK  [Workshop]

Now that you’ve completed your masterpiece it’s time to show it off! This workshop teaches you the ins and outs of proper product photography so that you can share your work online and build your artist portfolio. Students will learn the capabilities of the Crafts Center’s Digital Photography Studio as well as some tricks and tips on how to set up a temporary studio at home! PHOTO RETOUCHING [Workshop]

Instructor: Jeannene Matthews

Whether you’re taking pictures with a phone, DSLR, or digitizing negatives, this retouching class will improve your knowledge of the basic and natural looking improvements you make to your photos. No photographic experience required! This four-week class will cover the basics of correcting light and color. We will cover the majority of tools available in the popular image software Adobe Lightroom. You will need access to Adobe Lightroom (computer or mobile) and six photos to edit. PLASTIC CAMERA [Workshop]

In this hybrid learning opportunity, students will get an introduction to medium format photography while shooting 120 film with a modern Holga and retro Kodak Hawkeye Brownie. The first course will be an in-person, socially distanced, photo walk through campus, with the remaining sessions taking place online. The course will also cover basic darkroom procedures, chemistry, and photo critiques. Supplies are included and will be distributed on the first day of class. Cancellations

Most of our classes fill quickly so there is often a wait list. Late notice cancellations require considerable processing and labor to try and fill the reserved seat. Therefore, cancellations under 10 days are not able to be refunded unless we can fill the space.
• If cancellation occurs 10 or more days prior to the start of a class, a 75% refund of payment will be issued; 25% of payment is assessed for processing charge.
• If cancellation occurs less than 10 days prior to the start of a class, a refund cannot be issued unless the space can be filled. If the space is able to be filled, a 50% refund of  payment will be issued.
If you find you need to cancel out of a class you have registered for, you must drop the class via Reporter», our new online registration system

Cancellation requests will not be accepted at the main desk or via phone or email.

Absences

To receive an optimal experience and get the most out of the class, attendance is important as there are no provisions for make-up sessions for missed classes.

Wait Lists

Names are accepted on waiting lists via Reporter» after a class is full until the day the class begins.  Wait lists are only valid for the current semester’s class – wait lists are not carried over to the next semester.
