Remaining Fall Semester Classes

The fall semester isn't over yet! You can still register for these remaining classes


You must be 18 or older, or a currently enrolled NC State student, and have health insurance to take classes at the Crafts Center.

Classes are available in varying session lengths as an ongoing study in a specific studio. For classes 15 hours and over, students will have access to the studio in which they are enrolled for the semester. For classes less than 15 hours, students can sign up for other classes and/or purchase a membership.

Workshops are focused sessions that are held for several consecutive days. Workshops do not include additional studio access; however, students will have access to the studio during the time in which the workshop is being conducted.

Crafts Center classes are extracurricular, non-credit classes.


Class Prerequisites:

Each class is designed specifically for a designated level of experience. Please do not sign up for an intermediate/advanced course if you do not have the required experience. Please refer to this key, which designates each class level:


Basics of Negative Scanning [Workshop]

Instructor: Katy Walls

A crash course in digitizing negatives! Learn the proper way to handle, clean, and store your negatives, and briefly explore the different settings that influence a scan’s resolution and aesthetic. Katy will demo both color and black and white films, as well as 35mm, 120, and 4×5 film formats. This is a HYBRID learning opportunity offering simultaneous in person and online instruction (via Zoom). You are encouraged to ask questions and discuss the needs of your archiving projects!

Encaustic Ornament [Workshop]

Instructor: Marcia Streithorst

Join encaustic artist Marcia Streithorst as she teaches you all about encaustic painting while walking you through the steps to craft a beautiful 3-D snowman ornament. You will paint on a wood birch panel using an encaustic medium (e.g., wax with resin) and a heat gun. In this workshop you will learn how to safely use encaustic supplies. You will also learn how to get a smooth or textured surface and how to embed other mixed media materials in your work. You’ll walk away with your small, completed painting. A materials fee of $20 is payable to the instructor on the day of the workshop. This workshop is suited for all skill levels.

Ornament Carving [Workshop]

Instructor: Bill Wallace

Carve a wooden ornament in a piece of basswood using mallet-type and hand held carving tools. Use your imagination to create a one-of-a-kind sculpture. Medium hand strength is useful. No experience required. All skill levels are welcome.Visit Bill’s website: http://newlightwoodworks.com/.

Zentangle Holiday Greeting Cards [Online Workshop]

Instructor: Cathy D. Boytos

Impress your family and friends with hand-drawn Zentangle® greeting cards of all occasions! Using blank greeting cards or card-stock paper – we’ll draw these cards with applicable holiday and seasonal tangle patterns!

Supplies needed: 

  • Blank greeting cards or card stock paper
  • Black micron pen 
  • Pencil and tortillion (for shading)
  • White Gel Pen
