CRAFT:LAB Professional Development Series!

Our new C:LAB is a digital maker space for making, prototyping, and extending traditional media practices into commercial production. This dynamic Professional Development series will focus on personal and professional marketing, entrepreneurship, and digital skills-building. Stay tuned as we continue to build the C:LAB by adding new equipment, services, and classes.

Introduction to Adobe Creative Suite: Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign

Instructor: Greg Carter

The key to creating powerful presentations, publications, projects and images will be right at your fingertips as you learn to master the Adobe Creative Suite of applications. This class will offer a focused, hands-on approach that will take students from “creation to completion.” Each student will produce a final project that incorporates their own creativity, imagery, and conceptual ideas.

Key focus areas:

Photoshop: Photo/imagery retouching and manipulation

Illustrator: Vector and line art graphics and digital illustration

InDesign: Layout, typography, design and construction for publication and websites

  • 3 weeks focus on each application
  • Based on a common format and project goal
  • For all levels
  • Also for students who would like to brush up on their digital skills to become more competitive in the marketplace

Students will come away with a working knowledge of each application that can be applied to class work, professional development, marketing, design projects, websites, and more. Videos of each class will made available for review.

Instructor: Jessica Yee

This course teaches students basic techniques for creating amazing laser-cut pieces such as engraved glassware, mugs, signs and much more. Students will learn how to set up image files and load them into the system software as well as operate the Trotec laser engraver. Students will walk away with a variety of products, prototypes and artworks that could provide them with a basis for creating lines of marketable products. Students will need to bring their own thumb drive for access to files and purchase their own materials for cutting/engraving (some materials will be available for purchase at the Crafts Center) – sample projects and acceptable materials will be discussed on first evening of class.

Thursdays [4 weeks] October 28 – November 18: 6:30 – 9:30pm

Prerequisites: Access to vector graphics editing software such as Adobe Illustrator, CorelDraw, or other such software (trial versions are usually available)

Instructor: Greg Carter

This class takes students through the entire process of creating a personal, professional brand. Students will learn: the creative process for brand development; how to produce brand materials such as a business card and resume; website creation, and the basics of self-promotion. Taught by a digital media professor from NC State’s College of Design, Greg Carter, this is the first class in our new Professional Development Series, aimed at supporting students, professionals and artists the dynamics of marketing themselves for employment and personal growth. Students will need to have their own laptops or computers.

Wednesdays [6 weeks] September 22 – October 27: 5:00 – 7:00pm
