Patricia Morgado

Bio

Patricia Morgado Maúrtua is an architect and Associate Professor Emerita of Architecture at NC State University where her focus is on beginning design education, integration of architecture and landscape, and Latin American architecture. Patricia studied sculpture and drawing in Peru, Spain and Chile, and has participated in several exhibitions since 1981.

Patricia describes the inspiration for her work below:

I began working in ceramic sculpture in 1980 after my freshman year in architecture with the intent of reinforcing the lessons on three-dimensional composition. Little would I know that instead of geometric forms, the human figure would become my theme. Since then, when my studies, and later work, would allow, I have worked in ceramic sculpture (and some utilitarian artifacts). After a near 20-year hiatus since coming to the United States, I returned to sculpture of the human figure in 2022, and I intend to not stop again.

I am interested in exploring poses of the human figure where they can imply a solid form, as well as those that can introduce multiple negative spaces allowing light in, and views through, the sculpture.
