Beyond Basic Flat Glass

Instructor: Deborah Rodgers

Push yourself to learn more about the art of stained glass! Explore advanced construction and soldering techniques to create a challenging 2-D panel or a 3-D project. The class fee covers use of studio tools and supplies such as flux, patina, and polishing compound. You must purchase your own glass, solder, and foil.

Section A: Thursdays [6 weeks] March 2 – April 13 [skips Mar.16]: 6:30 – 9:30pm

Glass in the Garden [Workshop]

Instructor: Deborah Rodgers

Enhance your garden or large potted plant with a striking 16” x 5” rectangular garden stake made with the copper foil method of stained glass. Learn construction techniques using scrap pieces of stained glass, glass nuggets, zinc came, and brass rods, to create long lasting piece of indoor/outdoor art for yourself or someone else to enjoy!

Fun with Head Pins [Workshop]

Instructor: Kathy Driggers

In this weekend workshop you will learn to make glass components like leaves, flowers and other bits on the end of wire and bead making mandrels. These head pins can then be used to make jewelry (earrings, brooches and parts of necklaces) and they can be combined to make Table decorations (table broaches).  On Saturday we will make the components and on Sunday we will assemble these head pins into works of art.

Each student will need to bring 2-3 packages of Sculpey clay to use in your creations. Dark colors like black or dark gray are recommended. The Sculpey is used to conceal the wires and bind them together when making a table brooch.

Fused String Glass Plate [Workshop]

Instructor: Danene Groenke

Learn how to create stringer glass and how to cut the glass to make various patterns. Build a square stringer mesh plate with a tapestry pattern or a geometric pattern. Supplies included (each student will receive one tube of mardi-gras colored glass stringers but if you prefer to work with a specific color palette you may bring your own COE96 stringers.

Guided Studio: Fused Glass

Instructor: Danene Groenke

Do you have fused glass projects that you need to finish? Have an idea for a fused piece but don’t know where to start?  This is the perfect class for you. You will be able to work at your own pace with an instructor available for design ideas and technical help. Bring your partially finished projects or project ideas and the determination to finally do something with that idea. The Crafts Center will provide the space and equipment. You are responsible for providing your own materials (only COE96 glass is allowed at the Crafts Center).

Intermediate Glass Kiln Fusing & Forming [Workshop]

Instructor: Jean Cheely

Create four fused glass projects using skills beyond a basic beginner level. Learn how to cut circles, curves, and shapes with a circle cutter and mosaic cutter; how to work with Glassline paints, frit, noodles and stringers; and use of fiber board.
Class fee includes glass, Glassline paints, frit, noodles, stringers, and fiber board needed for class projects. Additional glass will be available for purchase.

Saturday, April 15: 9:00am – 5:00pm  

  • Skill Level: Intermediate
  • Prerequisites: Completion of The Art of Glass Fusing & Slumping class or Introduction to Glass Fusing & Slumping class at the Crafts Center or 1+ years of experience with kiln fusing glass.  Must be able to work independently and safely with glass.

Introduction to Glass Fusing & Slumping

Instructor: Jo Ellen Westmoreland

Intro to Glass Fusing & Slumping

An introductory level class – no experience necessary. Learn the basics of fusing and forming glass in a kiln. Projects include making small plates, bowls, soap dishes, tiles and jewelry. Create designs with both transparent and opaque glass in a range of colors!  Class fee includes glass and use of tools to create class projects.

Introduction to Lampworking

Instructor: Kathy Driggers

Come spend a weekend learning to make glass beads using a torch and rods of glass. Learn to make a variety of beads that can be used to make an item of jewelry or some decorative piece for your home. This class will teach you the basics in glass bead making such as dot placement, how to shape beads, how to encase a bead in transparent glass, and most importantly heat control of your glass. This is a beginner’s class, but even seasoned bead makers can learn from a review of the basics

Introduction to Stained Glass

Add some color to your world! Learn to cut, foil, and solder a 6” x 14” stained glass panel using the copper foil method. Pattern will be provided by the instructor. The class fee includes glass and materials to make one panel. Attendance at the first two class sessions is mandatory. Please do not register for this class if you are unable to attend both of the first two evenings.

Mesh Melts [Workshop]

Instructor: Jo Ellen Westmoreland

Learn how to create your own unique sheets of glass by melting scraps of fusible glass* through wire mesh. During kiln firing the glass melts through a metal mesh grid to then drip. pool, and flow together into beautiful random patterns.  * COE 96 glass only!

Stained Glass Lanterns

Make this beautiful 3-D lantern in stained glass. Add candlelight and enjoy the colorful reflections that glow from within! A great centerpiece for  your table, indoors or out.

Stained Glass Picture Frame [Workshop]

What better way to celebrate a special occasion than to create a beautiful picture frame from stained glass as a gift or to frame your own special photograph! Embellish your frame with sandblasted text or design elements using the Crafts Center’s new Rayzist sandcarver! Supplies included.
