Beyond Basic Flat Glass

Push yourself to learn more about the art of stained glass! Explore advanced construction and soldering techniques to create a challenging 2D panel or a 3D project. The class fee covers use of studio tools and supplies such as flux, patina, and polishing compound. Students must purchase their own glass, solder, and foil.

Designing with Strips, Stringers, & Dots

Instructor: Danene Groenke

Designing with Strips, Stringer, & Dots

Learn techniques for using strips, stringers, and dots as design elements in your fused glass pieces. Strip cutting, reshaping stringers, capturing bubbles, creating stringer “glass” patterns, creating glass dots will be covered. A $15 materials fee is payable to the instructor at the first class for tube of stringers and glass dots.

Guided Studio: Fused Glass

Instructor: Danene Groenke

Do you have fused glass projects that you need to finish? Have an idea for a fused piece but don’t know where to start?  This is the perfect class for you. You will be able to work at your own pace with an instructor available for design ideas and technical help. Bring your partially finished projects or project ideas and the determination to finally do something with that idea. The Crafts Center will provide the space and equipment. Students are responsible for providing their own materials.

Introduction to Glass Fusing & Slumping

Instructor: Jo Ellen Westmoreland

Intro to Glass Fusing & Slumping

An introductory level class – no experience necessary. Learn the basics of fusing and forming glass in a kiln. Projects include making small plates, bowls, soap dishes, tiles and jewelry. Create designs with both transparent and opaque glass in a range of colors!  Class fee includes glass and use of tools to create class projects.

Introduction to Lampworking

Instructor: Kathy Driggers

Come spend a weekend learning to make glass beads using a torch and rods of glass.  You will learn to make a variety of beads that can be used to make an item of jewelry or some decorative piece for your home. This class will teach you the basics in glass bead making such as dot placement, how to shape beads, how to encase a bead in transparent glass, and most importantly heat control of your glass. This is a beginner’s class, but even seasoned beads makers can learn from a review of the basics.

Introduction to Stained Glass

Instructor: Deborah Rodgers

Add some color to your world! Learn to cut, foil, and solder a 6” x 14” stained glass panel using the copper foil method. Patterns will be provided by the instructor. The class fee includes glass and materials to make one panel. Attendance at the first two class sessions is mandatory. Please do not register for this class if you are unable to attend both of the first two evenings.

Mesh Melts [Workshop]

Instructor: Jo Ellen Westmoreland

Learn how to create your own unique sheets of glass by melting scraps of fusible glass* through wire mesh. During kiln firing the glass melts through a metal mesh grid to then drip. pool, and flow together into beautiful random patterns.  * COE 96 glass only!

Monogrammed Box in Stained Glass [Workshop]

Instructors: Deborah Rodgers and Jo Ellen Westmoreland

Let your personality shine in the making of this functional glass creation! Explore advanced construction and soldering techniques as you construct a lidded box that is rich in color and design. Monogram the lid of your box with the Crafts Center’s new Rayzist sandcarver! The class fee covers use of studio tools and supplies such as flux, patina, polishing compound and hinges for the box lid, and one piece of clear architectural glass. You must provide your own colored stained glass, 60/40 or lead-free solder, and foil (available for purchase at the Crafts Center). This is not a beginner level class.

  • Wednesdays [4 weeks] October 19 – November 9: 6:30 – 9:30pm

    • Prerequisites: Students must have completed the Introduction to Stained Glass class.

Stained Glass Ornaments and 3-D Stars [Workshop]

Celebrate your Holiday Season by making ornaments in stained glass. Create one significant piece such as an open-center star, and/or make a series of simpler flat glass ornaments to give away as gifts! Various patterns to choose from will be available. Glass and solder is included in the supply fee.

Stained Glass Plant Containers [Workshop]

Your house plants deserve a lovely and colorful container created using the Copper Foil method of Stained Glass. Choosing from several patterns (one option pictured above) that will be provided by the instructor. Materials are included to make one of the options with additional materials available for purchase. The last day  of class will be spent with hands in dirt, planting and filling your planter with soil and plants. Class fee includes materials to make the terrarium, including soil and pebbles – bring your own plants!

Stained Glass Picture Frame [Workshop]

What better way to celebrate a special occasion than to create a beautiful picture frame from stained glass as a gift or to frame your own special photograph!  Supplies included.

The Art of Encasing [Workshop]

Instructor: Kathy Driggers

Want to take your glass beads to the next level? Learn four different ways to encase a glass bead with clear glass to enhance and modify the bead. You will learn different encasing techniques by making four unique glass beads. Learn to make the glass design move as the encasing is applied and how not to make the design move when you do not want it to move. This is an intermediate to advanced class and the participant should be able to make round and barrel shaped beads.

Tiny House Terrariums

Instructor: Deborah Rodgers

Create a tiny garden house made of clear textured glass embellished with accents of stained glass. Choose from several patterns provided by the instructor. The last evening of class will be spent with hands in dirt, planting and filling your tiny house with soil and plants. Class fee includes materials to make the terrarium, including soil and pebbles – you provide the plants.

Cancellations

Most of our classes fill quickly so there is often a wait list. Late notice cancellations require considerable processing and labor to try and fill the reserved seat. Therefore, cancellations under 10 days are not able to be refunded unless we can fill the space.
• If cancellation occurs 10 or more days prior to the start of a class, a processing charge of 25% of the registration payment or $25 (whichever is less) will be assessed and the remainder refunded.
• If cancellation occurs less than 10 days prior to the start of a class, a refund cannot be issued unless the space can be filled. If the space is able to be filled, a 50% refund of  payment will be issued.
If you find you need to cancel out of a class you have registered for, you must drop the class via Reporter», our new online registration system

Cancellation requests will not be accepted at the main desk or via phone or email.

Absences

To receive an optimal experience and get the most out of the class, attendance is important as there are no provisions for make-up sessions for missed classes.

Wait Lists

Names are accepted on waiting lists via Reporter» after a class is full until the day the class begins.  Wait lists are only valid for the current semester’s class – wait lists are not carried over to the next semester.
