Artist Brush Making: From Tool to Treasure [Workshop]
Instructor: Sarah Ann Austin

Explore the idea that a tool can be a piece of functional artwork. Learn to make a variety of brushes and how to harvest and source materials. You’ll create brush heads from hair, fur, and natural fiber. For brush handles you’ll use bamboo, wood, and even learn the possibilities of how clay can be incorporated to make handles and ferrul. This workshop includes discussions, slide presentations, and collaborations. The brushes can be used in various media with the possibility of mark making unique to each brush. You can use them in alternative process photography, ceramic mark making, lithography, watercolor, and much more. A materials fee of $65 per student is payable to the instructor at the start of the workshop.

Art Journaling and Collage [Workshop]
Instructor: Jillian Ohl

Sometimes you just need an afternoon to relax and be creative. This one day workshop will be a de-stresser and an exercise in visual journaling. It is not about the end product, but rather about the process! Use collage and other mixed media materials to express yourself. Bring your own paper, sketchbooks, and preferred art materials. Students are responsible for providing some of their own supplies and will receive a supply list upon registration. (Expect to pay $15 – $25 for supplies at a local art supply store.) Basics of Drawing
Instructor: Daniel Creech

For beginners. Learn the basics of drawing with graphite, charcoal, and ballpoint pen. Beginning with simple drawing exercises you will learn techniques for shading and value, to create more finished realistic drawings. You’ll explore ballpoint pen sketching and techniques as well to create better drawings in multiple mediums. This course is suited for all skill levels. All supplies included.

Introduction to Calligraphy
Instructor: Jessica Yee

This 12-hour beginner’s calligraphy class will cover three lettering styles—italic, uncial, and copperplate. The class will give you a history of letter styles, how to care and adjust the pen holder, as well as exercises, instructions, and practice sheets. Cover each letter group and discuss letter formations and variations. Practice pen and nib control. Discuss paper, ink, and overall construction of words. This class taught by calligrapher Jessica Yee will give you an engaging introduction to the beautiful art of calligraphy. All supplies included.

Introduction to Acrylic Painting
Instructor: Daniel Creech

Learn the essentials for beginning to explore acrylic painting. Materials, processes, and color theory are the foundations of acrylic painting. Using these tools you will learn how to color mix, find the exact materials needed for the desired effect and the class will culminate in you creating your own finished acrylic artwork with the subject matter of your choice. No experience required to attend and learn. All supplies included.

Introduction to Silkscreen Printing
Instructor: Dominick Rapone

Learn the basics of silkscreen and produce two to three prints by the end of class. The fundamentals of silkscreen printing include separations, coating, registration, proper printing techniques, and terminology. Learn about the process and history of silkscreen printing both as an expressive and as a graphic art form. Explore hand-drawn, photographic, photocopied and digital color separation techniques. The class will focus on individual projects that you are interested in. Use water based inks to print on various materials such as paper, fabric, glass, metal and wood. Learn how to print with their screens using a squeegee, apply emulsion to the screen with a scoop coater, shoot and wash out your images, mix color, and make editions of prints. Sufficient supplies needed to learn/practice the basic skills during class are included; however, if you desire to print large quantities of your designs or practice between classes, you will need to supply some of your own paper and inks for printing (more on this will be discussed during the first class session). Please wear old/dirty clothes to work in.

Leather Journals [Workshop]

Hemingway was never without his. Frida Kahlo’s are widely reproduced. Make your very own leather journal and learn to do leather sewing, dyeing, and stamping to personalize to your taste. Using a premium 6″ x 8″ journal with acid-free, archival paper you will create a leather cover that is reusable for many journals in the future! Your legacy secured! Supplies included.

Leather Tote Bag [Workshop]

Instructors: Gina Fryand Penny Parsons
To the market or the boardroom, this beautiful tote will be a timeless piece for any occasion. This workshop will cover sewing and fabrication, pattern-making/design, and tooling for the construction of a 14” x 14” x 6” [approximate size] tote with lush leather handles and accent hardware. Each student will be provided with one leather shoulder and a basic pattern to guide you for the design of your custom leather tote bag. You will learn to cut out your base leather pieces, finish the raw edges, sew them together using the Center’s heavy-duty fabricator sewing machine, and add the hardware. You will also have access to leather stamps to customize your bag and will learn to treat it with either an oil protectant or a color dye. A basic knowledge of sewing is helpful but not required.

Woodcut, Linoleum and Monoprint. This class is open to all, no prior experience
In this wildly creative and playful class, you will learn to make prints using found objects for texture and image, layered paints for varied colors, and a mask [an image cutout] to create multiple exciting prints! Use an 8” x 10” gel printing press and a variety of tools and materials, including upcycling papers from books, maps, and music sheets to print onto. NC Beach Scenes in Watercolor [Workshop]

Painting Roses in Watercolor [Workshop]

No experience necessary – beginners welcome. There is something mystical about a rose unfolding its graceful petals among the contrast of thorns and spiked leaves. I love sitting in a garden or at a nursery, the air thick with distinctive scent, painting with all my senses. Come learn to paint these wonderful flowers with a simple palette of color and creative textures that will define the structure of the rose. All supplies included.

Relief Printing

Watercolor Sunflowers [Workshop]

Cancellations
Most of our classes fill quickly so there is often a wait list. Late notice cancellations require considerable processing and labor to try and fill the reserved seat. Therefore, cancellations under 10 days are not able to be refunded unless we can fill the space.
• If cancellation occurs 10 or more days prior to the start of a class, a processing charge of 25% of the registration payment or $25 (whichever is less) will be assessed and the remainder refunded.
• If cancellation occurs less than 10 days prior to the start of a class, a refund cannot be issued unless the space can be filled. If the space is able to be filled, a 50% refund of payment will be issued.
If you find you need to cancel out of a class you have registered for, you must drop the class via Reporter», our new online registration system
Cancellation requests will not be accepted at the main desk or via phone or email.
Absences
To receive an optimal experience and get the most out of the class, attendance is important as there are no provisions for make-up sessions for missed classes.
Wait Lists
Names are accepted on waiting lists via Reporter» after a class is full until the day the class begins. Wait lists are only valid for the current semester’s class – wait lists are not carried over to the next semester.
